October 9. Pack your bags, grab your camera and your walking shoes for a 6-day adventure in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.  By the time you reach Beckley, W. VA you’ll be humming and toe tapping to the tune of John Denver’s, “Country road, take me home, to the place I belong: West Virginia, mountain momma, country road take me home” Check into your hotel and freshen up for a welcome dinner.  Meals D

 

October 10. Following breakfast, board your luxury motor coach for a ride to the New River Gorge and cross the third highest vehicular bridge in the world. Be amazed by the view of the vast mountains and the river below.  After lunch on your own experience the life of a miner at the Exhibition Coal Mine… ride through the dark tunnels and hear firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities of past and present day miners. Visit the museum and cabins from the 1800’s once used by these hard working men.  Visit Tamarack an Appalachian Cultural Center featuring hand crafted works by the talented artist and craftsmen of the mountains. Enjoy dinner at the center’s restaurant run by the Greenbrier resort. Meals B.D.

 

October 11. Enjoy a hot breakfast before departing for a scenic ride through the mountains aboard Cass Railroad. The smell of the steam locomotive and clacking of wheels will take you back to the time when this was the only means of transportation in the mountains.  Following lunch on your own at the Cass Depot experience an extreme change from vintage times to the future at the National Radio Observatory the location of a world premiere astronomical telescope exploring galaxies far away. Your guide will share with you the history and research taking place in this unique quiet zone. Tonight you’ll arrive at the magnificent Canaan Valley Resort for two incredible days. Dinner this evening will be at the resort. Meal B, D

 

October 12 Awake to the fresh mountain air and a hot breakfast then it’s yours to choose of how you would like to spend your day of leisure. Play a round of golf on this amazing mountain course, try your skill at skeet shooting or ride the chair lift to the top of the mountain for some amazing views of the valleys below. Hike some of the many trails, go horseback riding or just sit back relax and enjoy the mountains. This evening enjoy dinner and some good mountain entertainment right at the resort. Meal B, D

 

October 13 One more delicious breakfast then continue for the western part of the state home of Blenko Glass, where the tradition of hand making glassware in America has continued for over 100 years. See the craftsmen at work, and purchase one of their creations.Stop by Hillbilly Hot Dogs for a fun mountain experience then check into your hotel and freshen up before going to the vibrant downtown area for dinner. Meals B, D

 

October 14. Following breakfast, check out the hotel and head to Heritage Farm for an Appalachian festival. This Smithsonian Affiliated museum depicts Appalachian life and the progression of lifestyles throughout the years.  Join in the fun with some authentic Appalachian entertainment and a farewell mountain lunch.
